Amphibious transport dock USS Shreveport pulls into port at Naval Station Norfolk after a six-month deployment as part of Bataan Expeditionary Strike Group.

Wednesday, the amphibious transport dock USS Shreveport will be decommissioned at a ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk.

The Shreveport was commissioned December 12, 1970 in Bremerton, Wa. Its namesake, Shreveport, La., was named for Captain Henry Miller Shreve, who was known for sailing the first river streamboat up the Mississippi River in 1815.

The Shreveport served in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Restore Hope. In more recent years, the Shreveport also participated in Hurricane Katrina relief.

In July, the Shreveport returned from its swan song deployment as part of the USS Bataan Expeditionary Strike Group. For four months, the ESG conducted maritime security operations in support of the ongoing rotation of forward-deployed forces in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet Area of Operations.

The decommissioning ceremony is set to begin at 10:00 a.m., September 26th, on Pier 1.
